How do I test my Anti Virus software?

A safe way to test your Anti-Virus (AV) software is to use the "safe" test viruses at www.eicar.org

This fake virus is merely a '68-character signature' that main stream AV vendors have agreed on to test-trip their AV alert windows.

We DO NOT recommend testing your AV software from anywhere except iecar.org or your software vendor's site. To assume otherwise could become a REAL test :(

REMEMBER THE IECAR TEST WILL BE TREATED EXACTLY AS A VIRUS with all the same issues of AV software quarantining and later removal of the AV-like test files.

Although this test virus may do nothing, you will still have to clean up after it just the same. Anything less would not be a true test right?
