Domain Names
If I buy from you am I stuck with you?
No & Yes:
We register your "Domain Name" for you with YOU listed as the registrant (owner) and us as billing &/or technical contact. Much like you "own" your business's name, you also own your "virtual store" Domain Name with it's particular Registrar (dot.com, .org, etc).
There are third party dispute procedures in place so don't try to register someone else's property (name), don't think you have to be held hostage if someone does not legitimately hold yours & don't think you have to abandon your name because something is wrong elsewhere.
Your virtual store "space" (website web hosting space) is "leased". If you move from us to them or them to us you will not be able to take the "space" with you. We will instead lease you new space. You should be able to keep your name (vehicle plate if you like to think that way) whoever if they want to play dumb, or unscrupulously put their name, not yours, as owner of the dot.com it can become a nightmare. The thing of web horror stories that we are all NOT about.
The contents (web design) of your site may or may not be copyrighted by your previous web design firm. We ourselves do NOT copyright the web designs we make. Like the name your design is yours to do with as you like. More often then not however you are more concerned with a new take, fresh look, site revamp. Out with the old, in with the new. So domain name, yes is valuable property I certainly feel, and hope others consider you own that part.
In our case there is a "60 day" lock-out period (not of our doings) during which your domain name can not be transferred between "Domain Name Service" (DNS) vendors. Also during the transfer of your listing there is 72 hours window where your website will be unavailable. Keep in mind the name points to (like bolting plates on a vehicle analogy again) your vehicle. Name is registered one place, fastens to hosting anywhere else so equipped and someone is logging hours on design and maintenance. If you keep those pieces in mind as separate and connected then the smoke and mirrors of the virtual web world are not nearly as confusing to understand.
Depending on your current situation "down time" and "lock-out" time will vary. If you are having a problem with a firm that has "left town" we can always help you out with a "free consultation". In our particular case we tell ALL our customers EXACTLY what we are doing and PRECISELY where it is located at. (even exactly what it cost us !) You or anyone out there can manage your own websites just fine by yourself. Our people just find it's easier & cheaper to call us ;-)
Honestly 90 - 99% of the cost of any website we do is labor. The remainder is leased services, the canvas we paint it on. Honestly I am flabbergasted at what some of you pay. I am not saying it is not justified. I just myself have a really hard time holding a straight face. I do wear other hats and know how it feels all too well so probably why I enjoy the challenge of this more then the challenge of how much deep I can get in your pocket.
